“Stoke were lucky” — and Al-Samman hit back

Sheffield United’s Muhammed Furkan Köpf blamed luck after Stoke’s 2-1 win, prompting a sharp reply from Mubarak Al-Samman.

Muhammed Furkan Köpf has turned a 2-1 defeat into a war of words, and Stoke City manager Mubarak Al-Samman has wasted no time firing back. Sheffield United’s boss called Stoke lucky; Al-Samman’s answer was that Köpf lacked respect. There is no mistaking the bad blood between these two.

The exchange came today, after Stoke beat Sheffield United 2-1. Köpf’s verdict was a bitter one: in his view, Stoke had fortune on their side. Al-Samman answered with a rebuke aimed squarely at the man across the dugout, accusing him of disrespect. No handshake can make that sound like small talk.

You know how it goes after an away day: the rain in your collar, a pie gone cold, and the home side heading out with the points while you try to swallow the result. Köpf, Sheffield United manager since December, did not swallow it quietly. Al-Samman, in charge at Stoke since 2061, clearly had no intention of letting the criticism stand unanswered.

The next chapter is the match itself. For now, Stoke have the 2-1 result, and their manager has the last word in this particular exchange. Köpf has made his judgement; Al-Samman has made his. Neither man has offered an inch, and the next meeting between them now has an extra edge before a ball is kicked.
