35 together, five apart: Getafe’s centre-back difference

Getafe have won 17 of 35 games with Mohamed Gnessoa and Emili together; without one, they have won once in five.

35 games together have brought Getafe 17 wins, eight draws and 10 defeats. In the five without one of their centre-backs, the return is one win, one draw and three defeats. The partnership’s verdict is not complicated: strong.

The difference is clearest at either end. With Gnessoa and Emili, Getafe have scored 1.3 goals a game and conceded 1.0. Without one, those rates are 0.4 scored and 2.0 conceded. The sample without the pair is small; the contrast is not. Across the 35 games together, the balance is seven wins better than defeats. Across the five apart, defeats outnumber wins by two.

It is a season-so-far measure of a partnership, not a claim that two centre-backs explain every result. But for Getafe, the arithmetic gives the pairing a plain case: more points won, more goals scored and fewer conceded when both are available to play together.

Their working styles offer little fuss. Emili keeps his game simple, while Gnessoa is not inclined to give an opponent much room. Neither needs to turn the partnership into a performance. The numbers suggest that, with both in place, Getafe have been more dependable at the back and more productive overall.

The wider season has had its unsettled passages. Getafe were managerless in January after a heavy derby defeat, and the search for a successor followed. On 17 March, however, they were among the Spanish clubs to win in Europe, part of a two-games-won, two-games-played clean sweep for the sides mentioned in that account. That result belongs to the Europa League, not the Spanish First Division; it is a useful recent note, not a change to a league table.

Gnessoa has been at Getafe since 2061, after a £15.3m move from AFC Chindia Târgovişte. Emili arrived from Eibar in 2058 for £5.7m and has played 241 games for the club. Those histories matter less than the present pairing, which has shared 35 games this season so far and turned them into a markedly better return than Getafe’s five games without one of them.

There is no need to make five matches into a law. They are enough to make the alternative look uncomfortable. Together: 1.0 conceded a game. Apart: 2.0. The better number is the one Getafe have spent more time producing.
