“Cordes lacks respect”
After Bayern’s 5-1 win over Bielefeld, Nico Cordes and Iñigo Mateo turned a heavy defeat into a public dispute over criticism and respect.

Can a 5-1 defeat settle an argument? On 22 March, FC Bayern München beat DSC Arminia Bielefeld by that score; afterwards, their managers made clear that the result had not settled much at all.
Nico Cordes stood by his criticism of Bayern despite the defeat. Iñigo Mateo’s answer was that Cordes lacked respect. The sequence was plain: Cordes had criticised Bayern, Bayern won emphatically, and Cordes did not retreat. Mateo then made the disagreement personal, framing it as a question of how one club speaks about another.
The score gives Mateo the strongest immediate reply. But Cordes’s refusal to soften his words gives the exchange a second life beyond the match: the Bielefeld manager would rather absorb the result than withdraw the criticism. There was no further answer in the day’s exchange, only two positions made sharper by the final score.
For Bielefeld, this was another hard day in a season already marked by the club’s struggle. Our coverage last month described them bottom and on a 15-game league losing run; a defeat of this scale against Bayern adds to that context without making the managers’ dispute any less revealing. For Bayern, the win was the match’s decisive fact, but Mateo’s response suggests he sees public respect as something that cannot be separated from how opponents discuss his club.
The next Bundesliga fixture named for Bayern is against Fortuna Düsseldorf on 5 April. Whether Cordes and Mateo meet again is not yet set out; for now, the result is clear, and neither manager has conceded the argument.
