With a quarter-final place within reach after the commanding lead previewed last week, Chelsea had the chance on Wednesday to make their UEFA Champions League tie with Olympique Lyonnais a formality. César Schwindt helped do just that, scoring once, assisting once and earning an 8.8 rating as Chelsea won 4-0.

The Chelsea defender was named player of the match after completing 72 of 75 passes, making four interceptions and creating three key passes. His display was the sort of dependable excellence that rarely asks for applause and rather awkwardly keeps earning it. Across the full 90 minutes, Chelsea had 65 per cent possession and 26 shots; Lyon managed two attempts, neither on target.

Schwindt’s contribution came amid a night of Chelsea pressure, with the hosts also striking the woodwork twice. Nacho Valera matched Schwindt’s return of a goal and an assist, while substitutes Ken Myers and Júnior each scored after coming on in the 58th minute. Chelsea’s goalkeeper did not need to make a save. Lyon’s had six to make, four of them parried.

There was an old Chelsea thread in the opposition, too: José Franco, who spent 14 seasons at the club, was in Lyon’s starting side. Former Blue Chris Dooley came on in the 56th minute, by which point the visitors were already struggling to find a foothold. Nostalgia, evidently, offered no defensive assistance.

The win comes days after Chelsea lifted the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 victory over Rotherham United. Chelsea’s run of 23 consecutive Champions League titles ended when they finished runners-up in 2062/63. Schwindt’s assured performance does not settle this season’s campaign, but it gives Chelsea a polished step towards the quarter-finals—and Lyon little comfort beyond the final whistle.
