Europe’s knockout ties are meant to leave room for doubt. Chelsea have made this one look almost settled — but the business of finishing it still matters. Their 4-0 win at Olympique Lyonnais on 11 March gives them a formidable advantage before the return at Chelsea on 19 March, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Chelsea are top of the English Premier Division with 82 points from 29 games; Lyon lead Ligue 1 Uber Eats with 57 points from 25. The clubs’ latest meeting has widened that gulf sharply, although their earlier contest this season offers a warning against complacency: Lyon beat Chelsea 3-2 on 18 September. Chelsea won the most recent home meeting, 5-1, on 14 March last year.

The wider form favours the English side. Chelsea lead the English Premier Division with 82 points from 29 games and have won seven league matches in a row.

Lyon will be without David Mândrescu and Aoula Diarra, both regular starters, and Laureano Fernández. José Franco, meanwhile, returns to Chelsea after 730 games and 87 goals there between 2049/50 and 2062/63. The former Chelsea player will know better than most what his old club can demand of a side chasing a way back into a tie.

Chelsea’s recent history gives the occasion added weight: they have won 41 English Premier Division titles in a row. They have put themselves in control of this tie. Now comes the less glamorous test — refusing to let control become carelessness.
