Bayern’s Lead Meets Fortuna’s Test
The Bundesliga leaders host third-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf on 5 April, with 18 points between them and both clubs riding long unbeaten runs.

66 points from 27 games put FC Bayern München top of the Bundesliga, but the table’s neat arithmetic comes with an awkward footnote: their results have yielded 10.7 more points than their chances suggest. Fortuna Düsseldorf, third on 48, have overachieved by 10.3. The numbers do not cancel each other out. They make the meeting on 5 April more interesting.
Bayern have won eight league games in succession and are unbeaten in 12. Fortuna have gone seven without defeat, though four of their last five have been draws. Seven matches remain, and an 18-point gap leaves the visitors with little prospect of catching the leaders. Their more immediate task is to show that third place is not merely an excellent return on limited chances.
The teams last met on 11 November. Mattia Tamagnini scored the only goal for Bayern in Düsseldorf, where both sides used a 4-2-3-1. The likely systems are unchanged for April. Bayern have won all 15 of their recent league meetings with sides using that shape; Fortuna’s record against it is five wins, six draws and four defeats. Those records offer a measure, not a forecast.
Sil Vlietstra is Bayern’s clearest current threat, with a goal and five assists across his last five games. Leanderson, likely to face Fortuna left-back Adrian Stelescu, has averaged 7.25 in recent matches; Stelescu’s figure is 6.79. Fortuna’s Viktor Knakal has scored once in his last four, while Aviad Biton has supplied two assists in five.
Bayern’s expected side carries a fitness concern rather than a confirmed absence: José Luís Hernández is tired, as is defender Toño Roca, while Vlietstra’s condition is also low. Fortuna’s Juan Manuel Cobián is fit but not expected to start. Bayern’s latest European defeat has already interrupted the domestic story; their 5-1 league win over DSC Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday restored a simpler one.
