Zwolle’s narrow edge restores derby balance

One goal was enough to settle a derby that has refused to settle into a pattern. PEC Zwolle beat Go Ahead Eagles 1-0 on Friday, with Pim van den Nieuwenhof’s drive in the 22nd minute deciding an Eredivisie contest between neighbours whose recent meetings have traded victories.

Van den Nieuwenhof struck low and hard, sending the ball along the ground and inside a post. Zwolle had the greater share of possession and more attempts, but neither side fashioned a clear-cut chance; the scoreline was decided by the home side’s one moment of precision rather than a flood of opportunities.

The sequence of results gives the win its particular weight. Go Ahead took the October meeting 2-1, while Zwolle had won the previous encounter in January 2063, 3-1. Before that, Go Ahead prevailed 3-1 in August 2062. Friday’s result restores parity across those four meetings, with neither club able to claim a durable advantage.

For Zwolle, van den Nieuwenhof’s goal turned a more controlled performance into the result that matters most in a derby: one their rivals could not answer. Go Ahead managed only one effort on target, while the home side’s goalkeeper was called upon once. The visitors’ 14 fouls, against Zwolle’s six, offered another measure of a contest in which the pursuit of a foothold was not always tidy.

Such fixtures rarely settle the wider rivalry; they keep it alive. Zwolle have the latest word, and Go Ahead will have their own answer to seek when these clubs meet again.
