Land Sengkerij as Portland seal £795k winger steal
The Dutch right winger joined Portland Timbers from MVV Maastricht on Saturday for £795k.
Expected to stay put. Instead, Asse Sengkerij is off to Portland Timbers in a £795k bombshell!
The 29-year-old Dutchman completed his move from MVV Maastricht on Saturday, swapping the Eredivisie for Major League Soccer. Portland have landed a right winger for a fee that looks a steal.
Sengkerij’s spell at MVV was brief: he made three appearances for the club after arriving from FC Volendam. Now he heads to the United States, where Portland have shared the right-wing starting job around this season. Antonio, Lê and Álvaro have each started there three times since 1 July 2063, while Victor Espigulé has started once.
That leaves room for the new arrival to make his case. Sengkerij likes to carry the ball down the right, and Portland will hope he brings a fresh spark to a position that has had several occupants. “A new challenge, a new shirt,” is the sort of message this move demands — and the winger will want his football to do the talking.
He leaves the Netherlands after a career that has taken in FC Twente, Fotbal Club Rapid 1923, Almere City FC, FC Volendam and MVV Maastricht. His longest stay came at Twente, where he played 233 club games. Portland have added a seasoned wide player at a fee that looks a bargain on paper.
The deal was completed two days before this edition. Sengkerij’s next task is to turn that modest price tag into a major talking point in Portland.
