Rapid Reversal Leaves Dinamo Derby Blues

Fotbal Club Rapid 1923 came from behind to beat Dinamo 1948 SA 2-1 on Sunday, ending a run of recent derby defeats with a late surge.

Derbies are kept alive by memory as much as by the score: a result today becomes the measure of the next meeting, and an old defeat can give a goal its particular weight. In the four previous encounters, Dinamo 1948 SA had won twice, drawn once and lost once. On Sunday, Fotbal Club Rapid 1923 changed the recent pattern in the most direct fashion, recovering from a goal down to win 2-1 in the Romanian First League.

Tarald Lydersen put Dinamo ahead from the penalty spot in the 28th minute. Rapid’s Doru Ciolacu, booked a minute earlier, supplied the answer after the interval, driving low and hard from close range in the 75th minute. Seven minutes later Matar Soumaré struck with a shot that went in near a post, completing a turnaround that left Dinamo with little time to repair the damage.

The sequence mattered beyond the three points. Dinamo had beaten Rapid 2-0 on 12 May last year and 2-0 again on 7 April; in February, the margin had been 3-0. Their 2-2 draw in September had offered no decisive break in that run. This time Rapid made their home meeting count, and the late goals gave the derby a new recent reference point.

Rapid had the larger share of the ball and tested Dinamo’s goalkeeper repeatedly, but the figures alone do not explain the contest. Dinamo’s lead endured for nearly an hour after Lydersen’s penalty, while Rapid had to turn pressure into goals before the evening could belong to them. Ciolacu’s equaliser opened the way; Soumaré’s finish settled the score.

For Dinamo, the defeat is a sharp setback in a rivalry whose recent meetings had largely gone their way. Their old domestic honours remain part of the club’s history, but such pedigree offers little shelter in a derby decided by the next goal rather than the last decade. Rapid, meanwhile, have something more immediate to keep: proof that this fixture need not follow its recent script.

The balance between these clubs has not been rewritten by one afternoon. But Rapid have made the next meeting carry a different memory: this time, Dinamo led, and Rapid had the final word.
