Can Athletico Madrid Keep the Summit Under Pressure?
Ndiogou Konaté struck twice at Ponferrada on Sunday as Athletico Madrid stayed top, one point ahead of Barcelona, while Alavés and Sevilla climbed and C. Leonesa were left with a costly stalemate.

The summit was at stake before Sunday’s round: Athletico Madrid had to protect the lead they seized last week, with Barcelona close enough to punish any slip. They did their part at Ponferrada, and the title race remains tight. Below them, Alavés turned a late deficit into a striking climb; at the other end, C. Leonesa’s hard-earned point did not lift them out of the bottom three.
Ponferrada 0-2 Athletico Madrid
A week after a four-goal surge put them top, Athletico Madrid found a different way to defend the summit: Ndiogou Konaté’s two goals settled a match that offered little margin for error. His first, on 32 minutes, was a high shot with the foot from close range. The second came on 66 minutes, a low shot that made the result secure.
Konaté was the outstanding figure in a win that keeps Athletico first on 63 points from 29 games. Barcelona have 62 from 30. That is not a cushion; it is a lead that demands attention every week. The champions of 2062/63 have kept their place at the top, but there is no space for complacency.
Ponferrada remain 11th. For Athletico, this was the useful answer after last Sunday’s emphatic win: not another spectacle, but two goals and three points. The pressure now moves to Barcelona, who took care of their own business.
Real Madrid FC 2-0 Real Betis
Real Madrid FC made the decisive damage early. Giordano Bodo volleyed in from close range on four minutes; Khaidar Lobanov added a low header from close range on 18. The home side had its work done before the match could become a test of patience.
Pele was the standout for Real Madrid FC, who move to sixth. Real Betis stay ninth. For Madrid, a clean win gives the table a little more shape below the top five, though the gap between the sides is not supplied and should not be dressed up as a new contest.
Alavés 3-2 Levante
Alavés’ jump from 11th to seventh was the round’s sharpest climb, and it came through a finish that refused to settle. Levante went ahead on five minutes through Josema, whose low effort went near a post. George Barry replied for Alavés in first-half stoppage time, and Sebastián Pino restored Levante’s advantage on 56 minutes with a shot with the foot at mid height.
Then Alavés found the late answers. Iban Simón headed high from close range on 80 minutes; Endika Goti struck in stoppage time to complete the 3-2 win. Goti was the game’s defining performer, with the final goal giving an already charged afternoon its sharpest edge. Levante remain 15th. Alavés, up four places, have made a statement without needing to pretend the season is settled.
Vallecano 0-1 Barcelona
Barcelona’s reply to Athletico Madrid was plain and effective. Andreu Mariño scored on 12 minutes, a low shot with the foot from close range, and that was enough to take the points. Danijel Sekulić stood out for Barcelona as they moved to 62 points, one behind the leaders despite having played one more match.
Vallecano remain 10th. There was no late turn to alter the table’s main argument: Athletico are still first, but Barcelona have not let the lead grow. A narrow away win keeps the chase alive, and the margin is now the whole story.
Leganés 0-1 Sevilla
Sevilla climbed from 15th to 12th with a win that was as narrow as it was valuable. Luis Carlos González headed in from close range, at mid height near a post, on 36 minutes. Cristiano was Sevilla’s leading performer in a match where that single goal proved sufficient.
Leganés remain 19th, in the relegation zone, with 23 points from 29 games. They are two points above C. Leonesa, who have played one more match. Sevilla’s move up three places is welcome relief; Leganés’ position leaves no room to treat a home defeat as routine.
C. Leonesa 0-0 Espanyol
C. Leonesa had more of the ball and more shots on target, but no goal to show for it. Fredrik Stemland earned the game’s top distinction with a busy performance in the middle, while Espanyol goalkeeper José Manuel Gutiérrez made six saves to keep his side level. The home side’s nine attempts produced no clear-cut chance; Espanyol had none either. It was a contest of effort and resistance, not a parade of openings.
The defining incident arrived four minutes from time, when Espanyol’s Jofre Comadevall was sent off. C. Leonesa could not turn the numerical advantage into a goal before the final whistle. The point leaves them 20th on 21 points, still in the relegation zone; Espanyol are 13th. For a side that had more possession and six shots on target, the draw will feel like an opportunity left unfinished.
Elsewhere in the table, Villarreal remain third on 54 points, with Girona fourth on 50 and Real Sociedad fifth on 48. Oviedo are 18th on 25, above Leganés and C. Leonesa in the bottom three. The round’s leading fact is unchanged: Athletico Madrid hold first place, but Barcelona are only a point behind. Last week Athletico took the summit with force; on Sunday they kept it with control. That distinction may matter as much as the points when the pressure returns.
