Juve Stabia Win the Derby; Verona Leave Their Chances Unfinished
Luca Mascolo’s seventh-minute goal settled a fierce 1-0 contest on Saturday, with Juve Stabia’s former Verona goalkeeper Pietro Buccheri standing between the visitors and an equaliser.

A derby was at stake, and Juve Stabia took the local bragging rights with a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona. Mascolo struck in the seventh minute at the Romeo Menti on Saturday, and Juve Stabia held on despite Verona’s greater threat in front of goal.
The early goal gave the home crowd something to clutch, but no comfort. Verona had 15 shots and six on target, while Juve Stabia managed 11 attempts and four on target. The visitors also hit the woodwork twice; Juve Stabia once. Noah Baratta alone had four shots and chances valued at 0.75 expected goals. The derby offered Verona openings. It offered them no goal.
That was where Buccheri came in. The Juve Stabia goalkeeper made six saves, and the man who had spent three seasons at Verona turned familiar colours into a wall. His night began with a booking at kick-off, as did those of Juve Stabia’s Iñigo Burgos and Verona’s Stefano Marfella. The home side had signed Burgos from Genoa CFC in January; Mascolo, usually a winger, started up front and supplied the decisive goal.
Verona had possession for only 35 per cent, yet created the sharper danger. Juve Stabia had the ball for 65 per cent and won 12 corners, but still needed Buccheri to protect Mascolo’s slender lead. A derby is not decided by how much of the ball you keep. It is decided by who takes the chance—and who refuses to let the other side take theirs.
The recent meetings have been tight: Juve Stabia won 2-0 in an August friendly, Verona took a 1-0 league victory in October, and Saturday’s 1-0 result levelled the score between them in Italian Serie B. Verona will not enjoy that arithmetic; in this fixture, neither side gets to pretend the other is just another opponent.
