“Liverpool’s six-goal storm leaves Chelsea’s chasers gasping”

Matt Allen led Liverpool’s 6-2 rout of Luton as a wild English Premier Division weekend reshaped the chase behind untouchable Chelsea.

Liverpool’s six-goal storm was the weekend’s loudest statement: Matt Allen was magnificent, Luton Town were overwhelmed, and Chelsea’s nearest pursuers still could not make the leaders blink. The Blues remain 24 points clear at the top, with Liverpool now fourth after a 6-2 victory on Saturday that turned a shaky start into a procession.

LIVERPOOL 6-2 LUTON TOWN

Luton struck first at Anfield on Saturday. Sheran Applewhaite drove low and hard towards a post from close range in the eighth minute, a sharp reminder that the visitors had come to make a contest of it. Liverpool answered through Uebert, whose own low, hard drive restored parity after 20 minutes.

Then Allen took over. His volley from close range found a post-side route into the net in the 28th minute, and after the interval he scored again, a low-footed finish through the middle. When Eneko Sanz headed in high in the 59th minute, Liverpool had turned the afternoon into a demonstration of attacking force.

Edmilson Dias added a grounded finish in the 76th minute, before substitute Mihai Costaş headed in at mid-height three minutes later. Applewhaite’s second, along the ground in stoppage time, gave Luton something to carry home, but little comfort against a Liverpool side that had landed six.

Allen was the outstanding figure: two goals, an assist and a performance that made the whole ground feel in safe hands. The English forward is on loan from Chelsea, where he made only one appearance; on Saturday, he looked every inch the central figure in Liverpool’s surge. His club’s latest win takes them to 55 points from 29 games, fourth and two points behind Southampton, with a game in hand on the Saints.

There was no hiding the imbalance. Liverpool had 65 per cent of the ball and 22 shots to Luton’s eight. Yet Applewhaite’s brace showed the bottom side could still sting; the problem was surviving Liverpool’s relentless reply. Luton remain 20th on 21 points, three points behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Saturday’s defeat leaves the fight for safety a stern one.

READING 4-4 SOUTHAMPTON

Sunday brought the round’s most astonishing individual display, and the most painful draw for Southampton. Bruno Duarte Ferreira scored three times in six first-half minutes, putting Reading 3-0 up by the 22nd minute. His opener was a header along the ground from close range; the second flew high towards a post from outside the box; the third was a low volley from close range. A hat-trick before the half-hour: that is a statement, not a warm-up.

Southampton were not finished. Lior Efanjer’s own goal gave Reading another, but Octavian Muscă’s close-range volley pulled one back before the break. Marcos Delfino then drove low towards a post from outside the box on 61 minutes, and Frankie Clipston headed Reading’s fourth in the 68th. Edi Tudorică’s finish, struck with the foot towards a post, rescued a point in the 89th minute.

Ferreira was the game’s outstanding player, and the 20-year-old Brazilian’s nerve under pressure was plain. He is at Reading on loan from Chelsea, and his three-goal burst will have made the Blues’ supporters look twice at their own temporary exports. Southampton remain third on 57 points, one ahead of Liverpool, but surrendering a four-goal lead is a bruising way to hold that position.

ARSENAL 2-2 ASTON VILLA

Arsenal looked to have seized it late on Saturday, only for Aston Villa to steal the final word. Mattéo Blanc put Arsenal ahead in the 23rd minute with a low-footed effort from outside the box. Olivier Cadolle levelled for Villa before the break, finishing from close range through the middle. Bartosz Friska struck high from close range in the 85th minute and Arsenal seemed set to take the points; Pau Jiménez’s low finish in the sixth minute of stoppage time denied them.

Jiménez was the standout in a draw that leaves Arsenal 12th and Villa 13th. It was a late blow for the home side, and a valuable refusal to fold from Villa.

CITY CLIMB, NEWCASTLE HOLD THEIR NERVE

Manchester City beat Plymouth Argyle 2-0 on Sunday, with Jean-Dominique Mahe scoring on 55 minutes and Saad Ataba volleying high towards a post on 69. Ataba was the standout, and City climbed from 14th to 11th. Plymouth remain eighth.

Newcastle United came from behind to win 2-1 at Stoke City on Saturday. An own goal by Artem Shevchenko put Stoke ahead, before John Anderson equalised in first-half stoppage time and Diego Navez scored the decisive goal on 62 minutes. Navez stood out as Newcastle moved up to sixth; Stoke sit 16th.

Everton and West Ham United shared a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Rodrigo put Everton ahead with a high finish from close range, just under the bar, and Dave Martin replied two minutes later with a grounded effort through the middle. Martin was the standout. Everton are ninth; West Ham are 18th, two points above Wolverhampton Wanderers in the bottom three. Watford and Nottingham Forest drew 0-0 on Sunday.

The title race remains Chelsea’s to command: 82 points from 29 games, with Rotherham United second on 58 after playing one more. Chelsea beat Rotherham United 3-0 in the Carabao Cup on Saturday, while the league’s chasing pack spent the weekend dropping points or catching one another. Liverpool’s six-goal eruption was the exception. For the rest, the gap to the leaders still looks like a mountain.
