Four for Duarte Xavier as Porto Run in Eight
On a night when FC Porto's attack shared the spoils, Duarte Xavier's four goals against Europa FC gave the scoreline its shape and his team its swagger.
What does four goals look like when the night belongs, by the ratings at least, to somebody else? Duarte Xavier can tell you. On 18 July at the Victoria Stadium, FC Porto beat Europa FC 8-0 in the UEFA Champions League, and Xavier scored four of the eight, with five key passes besides, six shots and five on target. Rafael Semedo, two goals and two assists of his own, took the player-of-the-match honours; Vando Sérgio added two more. Xavier simply kept arriving.
The shape of the evening was set early in the numbers: 73 per cent of the ball for Porto, 28 shots to Europa's two, fifteen on target, nine corners. Europa completed 238 of 298 passes and managed a single shot on target. Against that tide, Xavier's task was less about invention than timing, finding the space between a deep line and a tiring one. Four times he did.
Semedo's evening, all dribbles and threaded passes, has already been written about at length, and Sérgio's two-goal turn too; this was a front line in conversation with itself, each man feeding off the others' movement. Daniel Carvalho's 91 completed passes from deep kept the supply steady. Iuri Fiteira, on at half-time, contributed an assist. Pedro Couto, with five shots and no goal, will remember the night less fondly.
For Xavier, 24 and Portuguese, the four goals sit against a career of 81 in 371 club games across two clubs since 2053/54, and a national team ledger still blank. Evenings like this one change the conversation around a player, whatever the opposition. Porto move on with the swagger of a side that has learned how many ways it can hurt you.
