Kalchev Turns Cup Night Into His

Pavel Kalchev scored three and made two more as Hamburger SV began their DFB-Pokal campaign with a 9-0 win at Heider SV.

Expected to be a routine cup night for Hamburger SV, it became Pavel Kalchev’s show: three goals, two assists and a performance that left the scoreline almost secondary. HSV won 9-0 at Heider SV on Monday, but the Bulgarian was the match’s organising force as well as its sharpest finisher.

He completed the full 90 minutes, took five shots and put four on target. Eight key passes tell another part of the story: Kalchev repeatedly made the next attack possible, not merely the last touch. His 55 completed passes from 64 attempts and four tackles won offered a measure of the work beyond the goals. He was named player of the match, with a rating of 10.

The gulf in the game was plain. HSV had 73 per cent possession and 28 shots, 19 of them on target; Heider managed two attempts and none on target. Yet numbers alone cannot capture how completely Kalchev shaped the evening. Three goals and two assists put him directly behind five of the nine, while his passing kept HSV’s pressure moving. For the home support, the contest must have felt like a long attempt to find a foothold; for the travelling side, each new attack brought another possibility.

Nahue Reuss, who also scored twice and had three key passes, was another source of danger. His contribution makes Kalchev’s performance more striking, not less: this was a dominant team effort, with one player repeatedly at its centre. HSV’s 9-0 win was emphatic, but a scoreline can flatten a match into arithmetic. Kalchev supplied its connective thread.

The display follows a more individual distinction: on Tuesday, Kalchev won the German Players’ Newcomer of the Year 2063 award. The cup performance gives that recognition a vivid present tense. At 21, with 32 national-team appearances for Bulgaria already in his career, he is no longer simply a name to watch; he is taking responsibility for how HSV attack.

That matters at a club where ambition and tradition sit uneasily beside the modern transfer market. This summer HSV paid £11.5m for Guillaume Brun, a player whose Monaco spell had brought only seven league appearances in two seasons, while also signing Antonio from Mallorca for £15.5m. Those deals invite familiar questions about spending and squad-building. Kalchev’s answer was made on the pitch: the value of a side is not only what it pays, but what its players make possible together.

The DFB-Pokal is only beginning, and one night does not settle what HSV can achieve. But Kalchev has made a forceful case that the route forward need not be measured in fees or headlines about new arrivals. On a night of nine goals, the most persuasive argument belonged to the player who helped create five of them.
