Can six be a round number?
Kidderminster Harriers put six past Carlisle United in the FA Cup, with Paddy McFarlane scoring three of them.
The ball had barely stopped moving from the kick-off when Matt Knight, once of Carlisle United and now very much of Kidderminster, slipped it behind the visiting back line for the first time. Aggborough made a noise that suggested it had seen this before, and by the end it had: the same move, the same finish, the same Paddy McFarlane, three times over, and a 6-0 scoreline in the FA Cup that read less like a cup tie and more like a misprint.
McFarlane took four shots. Four found the target. Three went in, and the fourth was kept out only because it had to be. Knight set up two more and was withdrawn on 61 minutes, which felt like mercy. Daniel Unsworth, a summer arrival, scored one and dribbled past his man six times. Philip Guyton and Jermaine Scott came on at half-time and between them added a goal and an assist, which is a decent afternoon's work for a pair of substitutes.
Carlisle had their spells, or rather their moments. Selmir Hasanovic won five tackles and made five interceptions, and Connor Webb, in goal for the benched Ashley Thomas, made nine clearances. Their expected goals read 0.51, against 1.54 for the hosts, which is the sort of figure that explains a 6-0 about as well as a weather forecast explains a flood.
Kidderminster made changes of their own, and the shape held. The right flank of Matty Shah and Knight has been the subject of some quiet muttering; on this evidence the muttering can pause.
The count: six goals, thirteen shots on target, one 10.0 rating. The better number is the one Carlisle take home, which is none.
