Chelsea extend lead with comfortable win over Reading
Goals from Pablo Ferrer and Roberto Baggio keep the Blues seven points clear at the top.

Chelsea's relentless march towards a 42nd consecutive English Premier Division title continued with a routine 2-0 victory over Reading at the Drogba Arena. The Blues, now on 61 points from 21 games, rarely needed to move out of second gear against a Reading side that came to defend and offered little going forward.
Pablo Ferrer opened the scoring after 16 minutes, finishing off a move orchestrated by Howard Parkins, who was the game's standout performer with two assists and a passing masterclass from midfield. Roberto Baggio, introduced as a substitute on 65 minutes, sealed the points with a clinical strike 11 minutes from time.
The result maintains Chelsea's seven-point cushion at the summit, with Reading remaining in 12th place on 25 points. For all their possession and territorial dominance, however, Chelsea will perhaps be frustrated not to have won by a more emphatic margin. Júnior, Billy Laing and Lionel Messi all spurned clear opportunities, with Reading goalkeeper Lior Efanjer producing a string of fine saves to keep the scoreline respectable.
Reading's game plan was evident from the outset: sit deep, frustrate, and hope for a moment on the break. It nearly worked for the opening quarter of an hour, but once Ferrer struck, the contest was effectively over as a spectacle. The visitors managed just one shot on target all afternoon, and their attacking partnership of Ariel Sosa and Antônio Minatel continues to look toothless, having now failed to score in seven games together.
For Chelsea, the performance was efficient rather than exhilarating, but the underlying numbers tell a story of complete control: 68% possession, 21 shots to Reading's one, and an expected goals tally of 2.67 compared to the visitors' 0.16. Howard Parkins was the orchestrator-in-chief, pulling the strings from midfield and demonstrating exactly why he is regarded as one of the finest playmakers in the division.
The Blues' defensive solidity was equally impressive, with Urtzi San Martín outstanding at the back, recording eight interceptions and completing 79 of 85 passes. Reading's only moment of concern came deep into stoppage time when Ariel Sosa was forced off injured, adding to the visitors' woes.
This was a fixture that Chelsea would have expected to win, and they did so with minimal fuss. The challenge now is to maintain this level of consistency through a congested January schedule that includes an FA Cup tie at Burnley and a Carabao Cup semi-final at Aston Villa. On this evidence, it will take something special to stop them.
