Could a teenager help fill Chelsea’s defensive shortage? The Blues have paid £23.5m for 19-year-old centre-back Samuele Di Loreto, bringing him from Napoli as three defenders are sidelined and several others have gone out on loan.
Vanja Mačkić, Jassem Abdulla and Ali McKillop are all out until September, while César Schwindt and Urtzi San Martín are among the players Di Loreto must challenge for a place. He arrives with only two club games behind him, but Chelsea have spent serious money on a position that needs cover. You know the feeling: one more defender in the squad can make a long season look a little less nervy.
