Arsenal search begins in earnest as Secchi era ends

With Francesco Secchi gone, the names being mentioned for the Arsenal job already reveal the direction the club wants to take.

The Arsenal job is the kind of vacancy that makes the rest of the football world pause. Francesco Secchi is out, the club sits 15th in the Premier Division, and the search for his replacement begins with two names already on the lips of the press: Nicholas Dimario of Barcelona and Max Lee of Queens Park Rangers.

Neither has said anything definitive. Dimario, in particular, has been linked with the Manchester City post only four days ago, and his public statements have been carefully upbeat about his current work. Barcelona's manager since the summer, he has made no secret of his belief in the transfer process and his desire to work with a more experienced team – a line that will be read more than once by Arsenal's hierarchy, who must offer both resources and a challenge that has defeated many before.

Lee, for his part, is a Welshman whose playing career ended in 2047 after spells at Brighton, Sheffield United and Coventry City, among others. At QPR since June, he has spoken warmly of the people he works with, but the Arsenal link will test that loyalty. His tactical preference for wing play and a 4-3-3 with a defensive midfielder is not a radical departure from Arsenal's traditions, but it is a system that requires width and pace – qualities the current squad has struggled to supply consistently.

What Arsenal need now is clarity. The club's recent history has been one of contention without conquest, and the supporters have grown tired of near misses. The 2062 Europa Conference League win was a rare modern success, but it has not masked the league form. Whoever takes the job will inherit a squad low on confidence and a fanbase that demands more than promise.

The names linked are serious, but the vacancy is still new. Some will deny interest; others will say nothing. Arsenal's next move will tell us more about the club's ambition than any amount of speculation in the days ahead.
