£32.1m Buys Athletico a Cluj Old Boy
Krzysztof Dziedzic returns to Athletico Madrid from FC CFR 1907 Cluj for £32.1m, six years after leaving Spain for Romania.

£32.1m. That is what Athletico Madrid have paid FC CFR 1907 Cluj to bring Krzysztof Dziedzic back to Spain, and it is the sort of number that makes you check the receipt twice.
The English forward is 29. He spent six years in Cluj, from 2057/58 to now, and made 246 appearances there, scoring 96 goals. He won 15 trophies in Romania. That is a lot of silverware, and a lot of goals, for a player who was once on Athletico's books.
Because he was. Dziedzic has already worn the Athletico shirt, and now he wears it again. The club know exactly what they are getting: a player who has scored 151 goals in 433 club games across four clubs, and five in 22 for his country. No scouting gamble here. No 'project' talk. Just a forward who has been there, done it and is coming back for more.
Cluj will miss him. He was part of the side that kept lifting the league title and the cup, the years when the trophies piled up. Fifteen is not a coincidence. He was in the middle of it, scoring, winning, and making the Ilie Poenaru Arena a place where visiting teams dreaded the fixture.
But £32.1m is £32.1m. For a Romanian club, that is a fee that changes the balance sheet. Cluj have already moved to soften the blow, bringing in Cornel Furdui from Olympique Lyonnais for £17.2m earlier this month. That is smart business: sell high, reinvest half, keep the squad competitive. The Ceferiștii have done this before and they will do it again.
For Athletico, the question is simpler. They have bought a known quantity. Dziedzic knows the club, knows the league, and knows how to win. He joins a side that already has Farid, another former Cluj man, in the building. The two of them will have plenty to talk about, and plenty to prove.
Athletico are among the very biggest clubs in the game, with 63 major titles and a following that stretches everywhere. They do not sign players for sentiment. They sign them to win. Dziedzic's return is not a homecoming story, it is a business decision: a proven forward, at his peak, for a fee that is steep but not reckless.
The pressure is on him, though. He left Spain as a young man and returns as a 29-year-old with a reputation. The crowd will expect goals. The club will expect trophies. And Cluj will be watching, wondering if they sold at the right time.
They probably did. Fifteen trophies and 96 goals is a fine return on any investment. But football has a way of making sellers regret their arithmetic. Dziedzic will get his chance to show Athletico what they missed, and Cluj will get theirs to show they do not need him.
The fee is £32.1m. The stakes are higher.
