Nantes Lose Their Derby Grip as Rennes Win the Shoot-out

By Étienne Morel · The French Daily · 20 March 2064

Nantes struck twice inside 17 minutes: Abdallah Falah converted a penalty in the eighth, then Adebayo Ali made it 2-0. The Canaries had seized the contest and, with it, the argument between two neighbours who know how little a derby needs to become personal.

Eric Bolzoni, once a Nantes player, began the repair in the 61st minute and completed it in the 78th. The old boy did not merely return to the scene of an old allegiance; he altered the meaning of the night. His two goals hauled Rennes level and carried the tie beyond 90 minutes, where the shoot-out settled what the match itself could not.

Rennes converted four penalties to Nantes’s two. The team that had arrived with two successive derby victories left with the place in the French Cup final; the holders of the fixture’s recent upper hand were left with the more complicated inheritance of a lead surrendered. For Nantes, who last won this cup in 2061/62, the prospect of another final ended in the starkest way: not with a final whistle alone, but with the short walk from hope to elimination.

The match had seemed to belong to Nantes in its first movement. They held 64 per cent of possession and made 18 attempts, while Rennes had eight. Yet the score kept its own counsel. Nantes’s advantage shrank when Bolzoni scored, and his second made the numbers even. Rennes had threatened the woodwork once; Nantes’ command of the ball had not bought command of the result.

Ali was among Nantes’s brightest figures, scoring and helping to create opportunities, while Falah’s early penalty had given the home side its first lift. But the night’s defining performance belonged to Bolzoni, whose history with Nantes gave the equaliser and the leveller after it an extra sting. He spent four seasons there, from 2049/50 to 2052/53, before becoming the Rennes player who broke their derby sequence.

The semi-final had been anticipated as a meeting shaped by Nantes’s recent results in the fixture. The derby is often described as a matter of pride; here, pride had to endure the arithmetic of penalties. Rennes will take the final place. Nantes must live with a night that began as an assertion and ended as a reversal.
