Six Games, One Choice: Napoli Must Rest Basile Pirson or Risk Him

Basile Pirson is jaded after six matches in 30 days, leaving Alexandru Haită to weigh a proper rest against Napoli’s demands.

Can Napoli afford to rest Basile Pirson — or can they afford not to? The Belgian striker is worn down by weeks of games, and a day off will not put that right. Alexandru Haită must decide whether to leave him out for the week or two he needs, or risk asking more of a player whose body is already sending the warning.

Pirson has played six times in the last 30 days, across the Italian Cup, Italian Serie A and UEFA Champions League. His average rating across his last five games is 7.11, above his season average of 6.92. Those figures do not make the choice for Haită. They do underline the awkward truth: a professional can keep delivering while the accumulated burden keeps building.

And Napoli have only one club game in the next 14 days. That is a manageable window in which to give Pirson a genuine spell out of the side, rather than pretend a brief pause will clear a fatigue that has gathered over weeks. If Haită keeps using him, the decision will not be because the calendar leaves no room to breathe.

This is a familiar argument at Napoli. On 1 March, we warned that Stéphane Assélé was jaded after six games, with five more matches awaiting the club in the next 14 days. Pirson’s situation is not a copy: his workload ahead is lighter, and the answer is therefore plainer. If the player needs a week or two, what is the point of waiting until the schedule becomes more punishing?

The context is a club still carrying several fronts. Napoli beat AC Milan 3-1 in the Italian Cup semi-final on 5 March, and on 17 March our European focus was on the Italian clubs still with work to do in Europe. Pirson has featured in all three competitions during this recent stretch. But a striker is not made more useful by being run down, and a squad’s ambitions are not served by confusing endurance with endless availability.

Pirson has played 763 games and scored 371 goals for Napoli in all competitions. His professionalism is part of why the temptation to keep him in the side will be strong. That is precisely why the manager has to make the call, rather than wait for Pirson to do it for him.

His morale is superb and he is delighted. Good spirits are welcome; they are not a substitute for rest. Haită, in charge since 21 July 2063, has one game to manage in the next fortnight and a player whose tiredness will not vanish overnight. Rest Pirson properly now, or risk discovering that a dependable striker can be asked for too much.
