“Hugo’s night, Leganés’ last-gasp blow”
Vallecano’s Hugo scored twice in a thrilling 4-2 win over Real Betis, while Leganés left Real Madrid FC stunned with a stoppage-time victory that tightened the pressure at the bottom.

The Spanish First Division still has room for the old cup-run feeling: a night when the expected order gives way, and the provinces have something to shout about. On Wednesday, Vallecano turned a wild exchange with Real Betis into a 4-2 victory, and Leganés landed an even sharper blow by beating Real Madrid FC 1-0 with the last kick of their match. One result brought joy and goals; the other, three points of precious weight in the relegation fight.
Vallecano 4-2 Real Betis
Real Betis struck first on Wednesday, Manuel volleying low and near a post in the seventh minute. Vallecano answered through Diego Abad in the 20th, only for Eloi to restore Betis’s lead five minutes later with another low finish near a post. It was the sort of opening that makes a supporter wonder whether the evening will ever settle.
He levelled in the 28th minute with a shot along the ground, then put Vallecano in front on 65 minutes with a low, hard drive from close range. Pedro Mora completed the scoring in the 76th, sending his shot high and near a post. The full-time score was 4-2, and Hugo was the outstanding figure in a performance that gave Vallecano a lift and left them eighth, with Real Betis tenth.
Hugo, a Spanish player who has given Vallecano years of service, scored twice and carried the occasion without fuss. In my day, the best cup ties were not always the ones with the biggest names; they were the ones where a home crowd sensed its side had found another gear. Vallecano’s 15,196 had that to savour.
Leganés 1-0 Real Madrid FC
Alejandro Montero struck in the third minute of added time, sending a high shot from outside the box just under the bar. It was the only goal of the match, and it gave Leganés a 1-0 win over Real Madrid FC.
The visitors had more of the ball, but the figures told a story of little reward: seven shots and two on target for Real Madrid FC, against five and one for Leganés. Then came Montero, named the outstanding player, to settle a game that had looked destined to frustrate the home side. Óscar Fernández, introduced at half-time, supplied the assist. A late goal against a club of Madrid’s stature is a memory that travels home with the crowd; for Leganés, it also carries immediate league value.
Leganés remain 18th on 26 points from 30 matches, in the relegation zone. They have moved within a point of 19th-placed Oviedo, who have played one fewer, while C. Leonesa are bottom on 21 points. It is no escape yet, only a vital step towards safety, but those are the steps a club must take. Real Madrid FC stay seventh.
Leganés, meanwhile, had to wait until the closing moments to make their pressure count. Montero’s high strike beneath the bar rewarded their persistence and gave a crowd of 15,200 a finish to remember.
Espanyol and Ponferrada shared a goalless draw on Wednesday. Michele Cenderelli was the standout player in a match that leaves Espanyol 12th and Ponferrada 11th. At the summit, Athletico Madrid remain top with 63 points from 29 games, one ahead of Barcelona, who have played 30. The leaders’ grip is narrow, and every round now has the feel of a cup tie whose prize is the top place. Athletico’s next league fixture is Vigo on 23 March.
Spain’s clubs have also had a welcome European week, winning both of their matches today. But for the domestic story, Wednesday belonged to Vallecano’s six-goal entertainment and Leganés’s last-gasp defiance. One side made a night of it; the other made one moment count. That, in my day, is what match days are for.
