López’s 5.3-goal surplus

Raúl López has scored 10 Bundesliga goals from chances worth 4.7 expected goals, leaving VfL Wolfsburg with an awkwardly compelling question: exceptional finishing, or a streak due to cool?

“Ten from 4.7” is a tidy little plot twist. Raúl López has scored 5.3 goals more than the expected total of his chances for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, and he has done it with 31 shots: 17 on target, 10 in the net. That is a conversion rate of 32 per cent.

His total has not moved since, but the gap between goals and expectation remains unusually wide: more than one extra goal for every two he was expected to score. The figures make a strong case for a finisher in excellent touch. They also leave room for the less flattering explanation that the arithmetic may eventually ask for repayment.

There is no need to settle that argument today. Ten goals in 24 league games is the fact; 4.7 expected goals is the counterweight. López has found the target with more than half his shots, which is not a pattern easily dismissed as a single fortunate afternoon. Whether it lasts is another matter, and one the season has not yet answered.

Wolfsburg’s wider campaign has had more unsettled chapters. The German Daily noted unfinished European work on 25 February, after reporting the club’s progress through a divided run of continental results earlier in the month. Those games sit outside the Bundesliga tally, but they help explain why this clean little personal statistic is welcome: López’s goals offer one dependable line amid a busier story.

The current burst is plainly sharper than that long-term rhythm. Skill, fortune, or some agreeable combination of both: for now, the ball keeps agreeing with López.
