Boro’s vacant seat: Sabatelli linked, but no appointment in sight

Middlesbrough are still without a manager after Carles Aleñá’s departure, with Leicester City boss Marco Sabatelli again named in press speculation.

“I’m focused on Leicester City.” That is the line Marco Sabatelli’s silence leaves hanging over Middlesbrough’s search: the 46-year-old has been linked with the vacant job, but there is no appointment to announce.

The speculation resurfaced on Thursday, following an earlier link on 16 February. Aleñá has left Middlesbrough; Sabatelli remains manager of Leicester City, a job he has held since June 2062. No public confirmation has emerged that he is moving, and the link remains just that.

For Boro, a respected name in continental football, the vacancy is the story. The club are in the English Premier Division, but the immediate question is who will take charge.

Sabatelli’s recent public comments have been about Leicester, not Middlesbrough. On 23 February he dismissed suggestions of mind games at work. Earlier, he spoke critically about Leicester’s work ethic and shared frustrations over officiating. Those remarks offer no answer to the question now attached to his name.

A manager’s job can be filled by rumour long before it is filled in reality. For now, Boro’s search remains open, and Sabatelli is still Leicester City’s manager.
