The gap at the top remains an ocean, and on Wednesday night at the Drogba Arena, Chelsea showed why. A 2-1 win over Newcastle United was not a demolition, not a stroll, but a reminder that this side can find a way through when the game is tight and the visitors are stubborn.

The night began with a jolt. Rafael, the Newcastle right-back, surged forward in the 16th minute and beat Nicolás Piedra with a low drive. The away end erupted, and for a moment, the champions looked mortal. But Chelsea's response was swift and familiar. Lionel Messi, the 22-year-old left winger, levelled nine minutes later with a fine finish from Howard Parkins's pass. The Argentine was everywhere in the first half, winning four tackles and causing constant problems.

Hilgers, the 32-year-old central midfielder, put Chelsea ahead five minutes into the second half, from Messi's pass, with a goal that summed up his performance: tenacious, intelligent, and decisive. He had three shots, two on target, and completed 73 of 83 passes. The player-of-the-match award was inevitable.

Newcastle, to their credit, did not fold. They had 56 per cent of possession and created chances, but Álvaro Moreno in their goal made three saves to keep them in it. Paulo Roberto and Rafael were outstanding, and the visitors changed shape at the break, pushing for an equaliser. But Chelsea's defence, led by Vanja Mačkić's seven interceptions, held firm.

For Francisco Pardal, the night was a reunion. The defensive midfielder spent two seasons at Newcastle from 2054 to 2056, making 32 league appearances and scoring once. He was solid in the Chelsea midfield, alongside Hilgers and Howard Parkins, a partnership that has now played 11 games together and averaged 7.08.

Chelsea's league record is now 24 wins, one draw, and one defeat from 26 games. They sit on 73 points, 21 clear of second-placed Rotherham United. The title race has been over for months.

Newcastle remain eighth, with 38 points, and can take heart from a performance that showed they can compete with the best. But the gap between these sides is not just in the table. It is in the moments that matter, the ones Chelsea keep winning.
