Will Al-Ittihad's millions lure Van Wanrooij away?
The Saudi side have the Dutchman on a list of 69 names, but Ponferrada will not let their star leave without a fight.
Ponferrada's Daan van Wanrooij is wanted by Al-Ittihad Club Jeddah, and the Saudi club have the money to make it happen. But the Spanish side are not exactly paupers, and they have a player who cost £50.6m just last summer.
Van Wanrooij, 32, moved to Ponferrada from Ajax in July 2062 for that fee, and he has since made 60 appearances and scored seven goals. He earns £170,000 a week, and his contract runs until June 2065. Al-Ittihad's interest is real, but they have 69 names on their list, and Van Wanrooij is just one of them.
The Dutchman's career has been spent mostly at Ajax, where he played 555 games and scored 112 goals. He also has 51 caps and 10 goals for the Netherlands. At Ponferrada, he has become a key figure, and the club will not want to lose him mid-season.
But Al-Ittihad are not the only ones circling. Gino van Velzen, another Ponferrada player, is also on their radar. The Saudi side's shopping spree is well documented, and they have the resources to make a serious offer. Whether Ponferrada can resist remains to be seen.
For now, Van Wanrooij is a Ponferrada player, and he will be expected to lead them through the Champions League group stage. But the transfer window is open, and Al-Ittihad are hungry. This one could go either way.
