The Long Shadow of Chelsea

Manchester City host the champions-elect with the table already split and an old Blue in sky blue.

A year ago, these two played out a goalless draw that felt like a moral victory for Manchester City. Chelsea were already champions of everything, and City, then as now, were a side searching for a way to live with them. On that January afternoon, they managed it for ninety minutes. But the gap was never really closed.

Now Chelsea come to the City of Manchester Stadium unbeaten in fifteen league games this season, with forty-three points from fifteen matches. City sit thirteenth, eighteen points from the same number, with two wins in their last five and the familiar feeling that the top of the table belongs to someone else. The last three meetings tell the story: a 0-0 draw, a 2-1 Chelsea win, a 3-1 Chelsea win. The pattern is not kind.

There is always the personal angle, and this week it belongs to Nahuel Pelayes. The Argentine played 110 games for Chelsea between 2050 and 2059, scoring 24 goals and winning 22 trophies. He is now at City, but he will not feature: a twisted knee rules him out. The home side will also be without Daniel Rondina, who has a bruised ankle. Chelsea are missing three: Nacho Valera, Jairzinho, and Ibrahim Ramadan.

City’s form has been patchy, their midfield questions well documented. The pairing of Faris Asonganyi and Saad Ataba has not worked, and the papers have spent weeks asking whether the manager can keep picking them together. The answer, on current evidence, seems to be no. But against Chelsea, the problem is not just who plays in the middle. It is the weight of the side in blue.

Chelsea have won the league forty-one seasons in a row. They are not just the champions; they are the institution every other club measures itself against. City, for all their history and their modern ambitions, have never found a way to bridge that gap for more than a season at a time. This match will not decide anything, but it will remind everyone how far the distance still is.
