Chelsea's £23.5m project: Di Loreto's balance and decisions

Two months after arriving from Napoli, Samuele Di Loreto is settling into Chelsea's U18 side, and the scouts' notes say the club sees a long game in him.

What does a club buy when it pays £23.5m for a 19-year-old centre-back who has barely played a senior minute? For Chelsea, the answer seems to be a shape of player rather than a finished one.

Di Loreto came from Napoli on 30 August, and the fee raised eyebrows in some quarters. Our people have watched him closely in the U18 side since, and what stands out is not a single spectacular intervention but the quiet order of his game. He holds his balance through the turn, even when a forward checks back into him, and he stays on his feet when others dive in. His decisions come early: the pass out of the back is chosen before the ball arrives, and he rarely needs a second touch to sort his feet.

There is stamina in the way he repeats those actions deep into matches, and a work rate that shows in the small recoveries, the jog back into position after a move breaks down, the closing of a lane that looked open a second earlier. One scout's note describes him as a project the club believes in, and the evidence on the pitch fits that reading: Chelsea are not asking him to win games yet, they are asking him to learn the shape of them.

The timing is interesting. Chelsea lead the Premier Division after ten games and next face AEK Athens in the Champions League on 6 November. That is a squad with a full plate, and a young defender's path into it will be patient. Di Loreto's own numbers are thin, two club games and a goal at Napoli, so the work now is about volume and repetition.

How good he becomes is unknowable. But the traits are the kind that travel: balance, decisions, stamina, work rate. Those are the things a scout can see before the results arrive. Chelsea have paid for the shape of a player. The next step is filling it in.
