Rovers raid Hammers for record Wilson deal

Blackburn Rovers have made Welsh defender Rhys Wilson their record signing in a £12m move from West Ham United.

Why would a Championship club smash their transfer record on a 31-year-old defender? Because Rhys Wilson knows how to win titles.

Blackburn Rovers have paid West Ham United £12m for the Welshman, eclipsing anything they have spent before. Wilson arrives fresh from a Championship winners' medal with the Hammers and brings 368 career appearances across eight clubs.

It is a statement of intent from Rovers, themselves promoted from League One in May. Wilson spent two seasons at West Ham, making 43 appearances and lifting the Championship trophy in 2062/63. Now he drops back a division to lead Blackburn's push for the Premier League.

"I've won this league before and I know what it takes," Wilson said. "Blackburn's ambition matched mine. We're not here to make up the numbers."

Rovers' previous record outlay was dwarfed by this deal, and the fee tells its own story. West Ham, flush with their own record signing of Vedat Dogan for £38m, reinvested a chunk of that money in letting Wilson go.

For Blackburn, it is a gamble on experience over youth. But after a title-winning season, they are betting Wilson's winning habit is contagious.
