Büchel to the future? Chelsea's £5.6m German has scouts purring
Sascha Büchel, the 18-year-old Chelsea signed from Arminia Bielefeld in August, has caught the eye of our watchers — and the word from Cobham is that this one is maturing quickly.
What did our men see in Sascha Büchel that made them scribble so hard? Plenty, and not all of it the flashy stuff.
Chelsea paid £5.6m to Arminia Bielefeld for the German on 6 August, a fee that raised eyebrows for a lad who had spent his whole career at a small club. Thirty-eight games and three goals there, and nothing yet for the Chelsea U18s this season — but the scouts aren't interested in the ledger. They're interested in the player, and the player they describe is a determined, technically clean operator with a streak of flair and a team-first brain.
The moments they talk about are small ones. A tight turn under pressure in midfield that bought a yard and a pass. A tracking run back into his own third that stopped a counter before it started. The way he demands the ball again after losing it, rather than going quiet. That is what they mean when they say his game is maturing quickly: not the highlight reel, the habits.
He is German, he is 18, and he has come from a club where he was the main man to one where he is a face in a queue. That is the test now — whether the determination survives the queue. Chelsea's U18s will give him the stage; the rest is on him.
There are other irons in this particular fire. Chelsea sit top of the English Premier Division after eight games, and a Champions League night against Liverpool comes on 24 October. The first team is a long way off for a boy who hasn't yet played a competitive minute in England. But the pathway is there, and another Chelsea U18, Christian Becker, is being watched just as closely — so Büchel won't lack for competition.
How good will he become? Nobody knows. But the scouts came back talking, and that is usually a good sign.
