Real Madrid Lose a God: Can £27m Replace Christian Colombo?

The Bernabéu waves goodbye to its Italian icon as Al-Hilal complete a £27m deal for one of football's biggest names.

The golden boots have left the building. Christian Colombo, the man who turned the Bernabéu into his personal catwalk for eleven glittering seasons, is gone. Al-Hilal Saudi Football Club have paid £27.0m for the privilege, and Real Madrid are left clutching a cheque and a broken heart.

It was the kind of move that makes you rub your eyes. A world star, still strutting his stuff at the highest level, swapping the white of Madrid for the blue of Riyadh. But that's the modern game, sweetheart – money talks, and Al-Hilal have been shouting from the rooftops this summer.

Let's not pretend this is a football decision. Colombo, 33, has won five major trophies with Real Madrid, played 466 games, scored 32 goals from midfield. He's a legend. But the Saudi project has deep pockets and a Hollywood script. First Rogério José for £41.7m, now Colombo for £27.0m. That's £68.8m on two players in a matter of weeks. The message is clear: Al-Hilal are building a blockbuster.

And Colombo? He gets one last payday, one last adventure. You can't blame him. But try telling that to the Madridistas who watched him glide through defences like a knife through butter. They'll tell you he was priceless.

The Italian leaves with 668 club games under his belt, 39 goals, and 116 caps for his country. He was never the top scorer – that wasn't his job. He was the conductor, the maestro, the one who made the whole orchestra sing. Now the music stops.

Real Madrid will move on. They always do. But replacing a god? That's a script even Hollywood would struggle to write. Al-Hilal, meanwhile, are laughing all the way to the bank – and the title race.

Can £27m buy a legend? The Bernabéu is about to find out.
