Can a 1-1 Derby Keep Either Giant at Bay?
Bayern and Dortmund traded goals in Munich, leaving their latest Bundesliga contest unresolved and the rivalry finely balanced.

German football’s great derbies are never only about the points: they are arguments over who sets the terms of the game. On 1 September, FC Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund had to share them, drawing 1-1 in a contest that offered neither side a clean answer.
Niccolò De Giglio put Bayern ahead in the 46th minute; Andreas Altenhöfer levelled for Dortmund on 60. The recent history has swung sharply: Bayern won 1-0 in March, after Dortmund’s 5-0 win in November. This time there was no separation. For Bayern, fresh from ending their wait for the UEFA Super Cup, the draw was another reminder that prestige cannot settle a derby. Benoît Riviere, once of Bayern and now at Dortmund, was on the visitors’ side of the divide.
