Dortmund pay £38.7m for Keita as left flank opens up
Sadio Keita joined Borussia Dortmund from Fussballclub RB Salzburg on 20 August, with Peter Puls sidelined and two other players in the contest for the left-wing place.
Borussia Dortmund needed cover on the left before Peter Puls returns, and they have paid £38.7m to get it. Sadio Keita arrived from Fussballclub RB Salzburg on 20 August. The Malian winger now enters a contest, not an empty shirt: Puls is out until about 1 October, Marvin Kiala has made 27 league starts across the last two seasons, and Taric Freyni has made three.
That is the job in plain terms. Keita gives Dortmund another option while Puls is unavailable, but Kiala has the recent workload to make his case and Freyni is also in the frame. A fee of £38.7m puts a bright lamp on the new arrival. He will have to earn the place on the pitch.
Keita, 25, brings a substantial body of work. He has played 251 club matches and scored 29 goals across three clubs, and has 72 games and 15 goals for Mali. Dortmund have paid for a left winger with experience, not a punt on a name nobody knows.
The move also links two clubs through Jed Minors. The Dortmund player spent four seasons at Salzburg, from 2059/60 to 2062/63, making 112 appearances and winning five trophies there. Now he shares a dressing room with a player making the same journey in the opposite direction. “New shirt, same demand: work,” is the message Keita must meet in Dortmund.
The timing gives the signing immediate relevance. Dortmund sit top of the Bundesliga after three games, and their 1-1 draw with Bayern München on 1 September kept the early campaign in the headlines. Salzburg, meanwhile, are top of the Austrian Premier Division after six. Their old run of nine straight league titles ended after 2021/22; Keita leaves a side now leading again and joins one setting the pace at home.
For Dortmund, this is a hefty investment in depth with a clear opening. Puls is out. Kiala has the stronger recent claim on starts. Keita has the fee, the experience and a place to fight for.
