£3.9m: Bournemouth Bring Forna Back from Milan

Áron Forna returns to AFC Bournemouth from AC Milan, with the striker arriving as the Championship club reshapes its forward line.

At Milan, a striker was part of Italy’s game; at Bournemouth, Áron Forna returns to familiar ground. The Romanian has joined AFC Bournemouth from AC Milan for £3.9m, back at a former club as the Championship side rebuilds its forward options.

Forna, 31, is a centre-forward signing with a clear vacancy to fill. Stéphane Mbatchi Ngoma left for Watford on 21 June for £23.3m after five league starts across the last two seasons; Kostas Themistokleous followed to Middlesbrough on 7 July for £32.2m, having made 37 league starts in that span. Their departures leave Bournemouth with room for Forna to stake a claim, though the move alone does not settle who leads the line.

His return gives the deal its particular pull. Forna has played for seven clubs, scoring 103 times in 393 club games, and has one appearance for Romania. Bournemouth will hope the familiar surroundings help him turn that experience into a dependable contribution. This is not a glamour fee by the standards of the club’s busy day, but it is a deliberate bet on a striker who knows the destination.

Bournemouth’s wider business has been substantial: they have spent £43.9m on three players, the highest outlay in the Sky Bet Championship. Alex Waiswa has also arrived from Fulham for £24.0m, while Maxime Cazenave and Stuart McCann have departed for Rotherham United and Hertha Berlin respectively. Forna’s return is a different strand of that churn: an old connection, and an answer to two exits in his position.

For Milan, the transfer sends a forward back to England; for Bournemouth, it adds a familiar face at a moment of change. The fee is modest beside the sums involved in the other moves, but the task is not: Forna must make himself useful where the vacancies are.
