Fortuna’s £15.3m Palmieri punt puts the striker spot under new management
Fortuna Sittard have made Agustín Palmieri their record signing, spending big on a forward to fill a vacancy and raise the stakes up front.
Fortuna Sittard have put £15.3m on the table for a striker. That is a club-record outlay, not a quiet tweak to the squad: Agustín Palmieri’s arrival from Zaragoza makes the forward line the clearest test of what Fortuna’s spending is meant to buy.
The 29-year-old Argentinian completed the move on 21 August. He arrives with 120 goals in 434 club games across five clubs, and steps into a position already short of bodies. Corneliu Gheorghete had left for U Craiova 1948 CS on 3 July, after 27 league starts across the previous two seasons. Einar Már Þorsteinsson and Alberto Colpaert were both listed as out until around 10 and 11 September respectively.
Palmieri’s path to a starting place is not automatic. Boris Fredéus made 14 league starts over the last two seasons; Þorsteinsson made two. With those two sidelined around the time of Palmieri’s arrival, the new signing gives Fortuna an immediate option, but the fee will make every selection choice louder. Fredéus remains a direct rival for the place.
The signing also lands in a busy spell for Fortuna’s accounts. They added Nicolás González from Juventus for £5.0m on 23 August, then suffered a 3-0 defeat to Doxa THOI Katokopias in the UEFA Europa Conference League. The loss does not define Palmieri’s transfer, but it sharpens the pressure on a record investment to deliver more than hopeful talk about a project.
Enrique Padilla offers one Zaragoza link in the dressing room: he spent three seasons there, though his 12 games brought no goals or trophies. Palmieri’s task is more direct. Fortuna have paid for a striker to occupy the space left by Gheorghete and compete for a place. Now the bill is settled; the pecking order is not.
