Football is made of returns and departures, of one generation handing the game to the next. At Lyon, that exchange has taken a new shape: Carino Taraio became assistant manager on 8 August, moving from the pitch to the staff after a playing career that ran from 2040/41 to 2059/60.

The Portuguese former player made 696 club appearances and scored 18 goals, with Fulham his principal club. Lyon’s summer has also brought exits, including Walter Locatelli to Real Madrid FC and Ido Hayat to AS Monaco. Taraio’s appointment offers a different kind of movement: a seasoned footballer staying close to the game, now asked to help shape its next chapter in France.
