Ronaldinho turns Madrid’s last-16 passage into a warning
A 7–0 victory over FCSM completed a 9–1 aggregate win and showed the range, not merely the force, of Madrid’s attack.

Real Madrid entered the second leg with a 2–1 advantage and left it having turned a round-of-16 tie into a continental warning.
FCSM were beaten 7–0 at the Bernabéu, 9–1 on aggregate. Ronaldinho scored in the fifth, 22nd and 74th minutes. Juan Andújar supplied the most audacious finish of the night, lifting the ball over Cédric Renucci from distance after seeing the goalkeeper away from his line. Scott Crichton scored twice, the second from the penalty spot, and Pele converted a rebound.
The score was spectacular. The more useful detail was Madrid’s variety.
Ronaldinho’s first goal followed a quick turnover and Andújar’s release into the area. His second came after Pele passed low into the right channel and the Brazilian accelerated beyond Brian. The hat-trick goal was different again: Eliot Nicholas-French threw the ball into the box, Giordano Bodo flicked it on and Ronaldinho met it with a left-footed half-volley.
Three goals, three routes, one defender repeatedly asked a different question.
Madrid finished with 27 shots, 17 on target and 3.46 expected goals. They won 25 of 27 tackles, a statistic that explained why FCSM’s attempts to escape so often became the beginning of another attack. Chancel Beya produced six key passes; Pele contributed two assists before scoring; Andújar and Crichton gave the attack further dimensions.
This was not merely a famous club overwhelming a weaker opponent through accumulated reputation. Madrid played with urgency despite already holding the advantage. They did not manage the tie. They attacked it until there was nothing left to manage.
Ronaldinho’s 9.9 rating caught the scale of the individual performance, but his hat-trick belonged to an attacking network rather than a solo exhibition. Pele found the spaces behind midfield. Crichton moved between creator and finisher. Andújar’s chip altered the emotional temperature of the match before FCSM had recovered from the opener.
The Champions League now becomes less forgiving. A seven-goal win does not carry into the next round, and Madrid’s domestic season has not offered the same unbroken authority as Chelsea’s in England. Yet knockout football is partly a contest of what opponents are forced to imagine. After this, every team remaining must imagine Ronaldinho receiving in the right channel, Pele turning between the lines and Crichton arriving late.
Madrid did not simply qualify. They expanded the list of dangers Europe must prepare for.
