One-Nil to the Railroaders
Juan Carlos struck on the hour as CFR Cluj made Real Madrid pay for their tired legs in Romania.

Sixty. The minute the game turned, the minute Real Madrid’s fatigued legs finally failed them, and the minute CFR Cluj’s name was written into the knockout rounds of the Champions League. Juan Carlos, a midfielder whose name had been murmured in previews but never feared, arrived late in the box to sweep home the only goal of a taut, unforgiving night at the Ilie Poenaru Arena.
Our preview had warned of a Real Madrid squad running on empty, and so it proved. The visitors started brightly enough, Ronaldinho hitting the woodwork in the first half, but their passing lacked its usual snap, and the final ball was too often a yard short. Cluj, by contrast, were compact, disciplined, and patient, exactly the side that has made them such a stubborn opponent in Europe.
The game’s defining moment came on the hour. A half-cleared corner fell to Wilson on the right, and his low cross was met by Juan Carlos, arriving between two defenders, to steer the ball past Hasitha Mohamed Risvi. It was a goal that rewarded the Romanian side’s persistence and punished Real Madrid’s sloppiness in possession.
Real Madrid pushed for an equaliser, but the changes made by their coach — including the removal of the ineffective Eliot Nicholas-French — brought little. The home side’s goalkeeper, Cornel Furdui, was rarely troubled, and when called upon, he was equal to the task. Cluj’s defence, marshalled superbly by Wilson and Rafael, stood firm, and the final whistle brought a roar of relief and delight from the home crowd.
This was a victory built on the foundations of that unbeaten league run, and it carries Cluj into the knockout stages with genuine belief. For Real Madrid, it is a night to forget, and a reminder that in this competition, there are no easy games.
