Real Madrid Bring Zack Vela Home from Manchester United for £16.5m
The Englishman’s long spell at Manchester United is over, with Real Madrid FC signing him on 2 August for £16.5m.
Once a Manchester United player, now a Real Madrid one: Zack Vela’s next chapter begins in Spain, where the Englishman arrives carrying more than a decade of memories from his former club.
Real Madrid FC completed the transfer on 2 August, paying £16.5m for the 28-year-old. Vela’s United years ran from 2050/51 to 2063/64; across 290 appearances there, he scored 26 goals and won one trophy. His departure closes a substantial stretch of his career, while Madrid gain a player with 367 club games and 30 goals across his time at two clubs.
There is a particular pull in a move like this: the old familiar colours exchanged for the white shirt, the past carried into a new affection. Vela is English, but Madrid’s signing makes him part of the Spanish game’s present—and gives supporters a new name to welcome into its daily conversation. He has also represented his country 24 times, scoring four goals.
The move comes amid a busy spell of recruitment for Real Madrid. Walter Locatelli arrived from Olympique Lyonnais for £22.5m on 8 August, while Omer Banano joined from Hertha Berlin for £6.7m on 4 August. Vela’s transfer is another strand in a summer story that is taking shape one arrival at a time.
Madrid already have another link to United in Hasitha Mohamed Risvi, who played there in 2051/52 and 2052/53 before joining the Spanish club. But Vela’s connection is the deeper one: more than a decade in Manchester, now folded into a fresh beginning. The fee is £16.5m; the feeling is harder to price. The bullring changes, the music does not: Vela steps into a new arena, and Madrid’s crowd will wait to hear his first note.
