The Europa League’s contenders choose different routes
Marseille embraced risk, Villarreal imposed order and Bayern displayed authority in a week that sharpened the competition’s middle distance.

The Europa League supplied two reminders that European credibility can be earned in very different ways.
Marseille beat Ludogorets 5–3, with Lucca Strano scoring twice before Jardel Volpe, Yann Lelaure and Fernando Ibáñez added further goals. It was a victory of attacking abundance, thrilling and slightly untidy, the kind that encourages confidence while leaving a manager with defensive notes for the morning.
Villarreal offered the cleaner version. Concordia Chiajna were beaten 4–0, José Miguel scoring twice after José Luis Bueno had opened the match and before Ulises Garay completed it. Bayern also won 4–0 against Dinamo Bucureşti, while PSG defeated HJK 3–0.
None of these results should be mistaken for a knockout verdict. They do, however, show the range of clubs treating the Europa League as more than consolation. Marseille’s game carried risk, Villarreal’s control and Bayern’s authority. The competition’s next stages will reward the side capable of combining all three qualities without inheriting their weaknesses.
