“£15.7m buys more than a new shirt”
FC Lugano have made Bagas Hamzah their most expensive signing, bringing a 350-game Sparta Rotterdam old boy back alongside a familiar face.

£15.7m is the bill FC Lugano have chosen to pay for Bagas Hamzah — and the biggest fee in the club’s history. The Indonesian forward’s move from Sparta Rotterdam was completed on 31 July. Lugano have not bought a stranger. They have bought a proven old hand, then attached a price tag that changes the scale of their business.
Hamzah, 29, spent 350 club games at Sparta, scoring 105 goals. He leaves without a trophy from that spell, but with a substantial body of work behind him: 58 appearances and 33 goals for Indonesia, too. Lugano are not paying for a promise. They are paying for a player whose record of production is already established — while asking him to make the cost look sensible on the pitch.
There is a familiar thread running through the move. Léon van den Bosch is also at Lugano after playing for Sparta, where he made 268 appearances and scored 22 goals. Hamzah will not be the only former Rotterdam player in the new surroundings. That may ease the landing; it does not reduce the scrutiny that comes with a club-record fee.
The timing gives the price extra bite. Lugano sold Tal Lam to Getafe for £12.6m on 11 August, after signing Tom Eliyahu from Fussballclub RB Salzburg for £2.8m the previous day. Those deals put Hamzah’s £15.7m outlay in sharper focus. The club have been moving money in both directions, but this is the purchase that dwarfs the rest of the recent business.
So this is not just a familiar face returning to a former colleague. It is Lugano making their most expensive bet on a 29-year-old with proven numbers and a long association with Sparta. The fee gives the move its headline; the question for Lugano is whether Hamzah can make it feel like a price paid for certainty, rather than hope dressed up as a project.
