Wolfsburg snap up Ardiles to stiffen the midfield

Edey Ardiles leaves Mallorca for VfL Wolfsburg in a £12.5m deal, and the Bundesliga side have bought themselves a worker.

Wolfsburg have done their homework. Edey Ardiles arrives from Mallorca for £12.5m, and this is a signing built on sweat, not show.

The Spaniard is 24. He has spent his career in the engine room: 225 club games across four clubs, 16 goals. Those are not the numbers of a man who hogs the headlines. They are the numbers of a man who does the dirty work and lets others take the bow. Wolfsburg, with a worldwide following and six major titles behind them, know the value of that.

Mallorca will feel the loss. Ardiles wore their shirt from 2061/62, 43 games, one goal, no trophies. Not a glamorous spell. A grafting one. And grafting is what the Ruhr respects, even when it happens in Lower Saxony.

He never got a cap for Spain. Fine. Some players are made for the national team, some are made for the league grind. Ardiles is the second kind, and there is no shame in it.

Mallorca are not sitting still. They have just spent £7.2m on two players, the most in their league, and they sold Antonio to Hamburger SV for £15.5m earlier this month. The money is coming in and going out. That is a club with a plan, or at least a busy chequebook.

At Wolfsburg, Ardiles will find a new man in charge: Joe Powell, appointed manager on 16 July. Powell knows a midfielder who turns up every week. He has bought one.

No fireworks. No fuss. Just a £12.5m deal for a player who will run until the whistle. In this game, that is worth more than a highlight reel.
