"It's just a number, but it's a nice one"
Rodrigues has passed Marcin Woroniecki's 109 to become Rotherham United's leading scorer, with 114 goals and a summer of new arrivals around him.
"It's just a number, but it's a nice one," Rodrigues said, which is the most diplomatic thing anyone has said about 114.
The Brazilian reached it this season, his fifteenth goal of the 2062/63 campaign taking him past Marcin Woroniecki's 109 and into sole ownership of Rotherham United's scoring list. He is 32. He has been at the club since 2046/47, one of two clubs on a career record of 539 games and 148 goals, and his international return reads five games, three goals.
The ratio that matters is the one that has moved: 114 against 109, five clear, with the season still running. Fifteen goals in a single campaign at his age is not a spike; it is the continuation of a line that has been climbing for sixteen years.
Woroniecki's mark stood long enough to feel permanent. It no longer does. The crowd at Rotherham Stadium, opened in 2046 and seating 40,319, has had a decade and a half to learn what a Rodrigues goal sounds like, and the noise when the 114th went in was the noise of a number finally changing hands.
The timing is not incidental. Rotherham qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2062, and this summer they have spent £32.0m on two players, Kemal Aydın arriving from Beşiktaş A.Ş. for £10.7m and Ronaldo from Fulham for £21.3m. A club that won the 2059 FA Cup and has eight major titles is now buying for a squad whose leading scorer is closer to the end of his career than the start.
That is the awkward arithmetic of a record like this. The man who owns the number is 32; the men bought to play beside him are 18 and unstated. For now the line reads Rodrigues 114, Woroniecki 109. Next season it reads differently, one way or another.
