Can Lazio’s Cup Betrayal Become Juventus’s League Reckoning?
The leaders arrive at Lazio on Sunday unbeaten in 15 league games, but the hosts have already overturned them in the Italian Cup and now seek another blow in a derby with the summit at stake.

Then came the cup’s late theatre; now comes the league’s colder verdict. S.S. Lazio welcome Juventus on Sunday, 23 March, with the leaders’ 15-match unbeaten run in Italian Serie A facing a side that has already made them suffer this season.
Juventus sit first with 70 points; Lazio are eighth on 44, 26 points behind with a game in hand. The visitors have won 22 league matches; Lazio have lost only six and are unbeaten in nine, but too many draws have kept them from the high table. Their points tally matches their expected return almost exactly. Juventus, by contrast, have 70 against 66.5 expected, though their defence has conceded 13 against 13.8 expected. Destiny favours the leaders; Lazio have reason to believe the script can still be torn up.
The last meeting, on 27 February in the Italian Cup, supplied the freshest evidence. Luigi Volpe scored for Juventus before Andrea Giacomini and Antonio Zoppi turned the match for Lazio, who won 2-1. In Serie A on 11 November, Juventus had won 1-0.
Volpe returns to his former club, where he spent six seasons and scored 21 goals. Lazio’s Emerson Salazar, a regular at right-back, is injured with a bruised knee; Marco Tofanari is also out for Juventus. Several expected starters on both sides are tired or below full condition, not injured.
The likely duel of Volpe against Salazar is therefore unavailable; if Salazar cannot play, Demba Coly is expected at left-back, while Volpe is listed on the left for Juventus. On the other flank, Lazio’s Amine El Amrani faces Edney Cruz. El Amrani spent seven seasons at Juventus before crossing the divide, and he has one goal and one assist across his latest five games. For Lazio, this is more than a chance to dent the leaders: it is a chance to make February’s cup betrayal feel like a warning, not an exception.
