One Goal, Four Different Tests in the UEFA Champions League Last 16

Ponferrada and FC Nantes carry narrow leads into Wednesday’s return legs, while Napoli and RB Leipzig begin at home against opponents arriving with formidable league-phase records.

The tie with the least room for error belongs to FC Internazionale Milano. On Wednesday, Ponferrada arrive with a 1-0 advantage from the meeting on 4 March, and the second leg decides who reaches the quarter-finals. The margin is slender; the contrast in league-phase form is not. Internazionale finished fourth of 36 with 19 points and a run of DWWWW, while Ponferrada were 10th with 15 points, their form WWLLW.

That first meeting also interrupted Internazionale’s otherwise strong campaign in the competition: six wins, one draw and two defeats from nine games. One of those defeats came at home to FC Bayern München; the other was Ponferrada’s victory last week. Ponferrada, meanwhile, have gone four league-phase games without defeat since losing to Borussia Dortmund on 23 January, and their draw at Manchester United on 20 February was followed by the first leg’s win. Federico Rocchi is injured for the visitors. The sides’ previous meeting before last week was Internazionale’s 4-1 home win on 1 November 2061, a reminder that the balance between them has shifted sharply since then.

Their domestic form offers a separate measure of each club’s season, not a change to the European tie. Internazionale are second in Italian Serie A, with 65 points from 28 games; Ponferrada are ninth in the Spanish First Division, with 39 from 27. Neither position settles Wednesday’s contest. The deciding fact remains that Ponferrada lead by one.

FC Nantes carry the other narrow advantage into Wednesday’s second leg, having beaten Vitesse 1-0 on 4 March. Nantes were seventh in the league phase with 16 points; Vitesse finished 18th with 12. The French club’s record against Vitesse adds weight to the lead: Nantes have won all three listed meetings, including a 4-0 victory away in 2050 and a 3-1 home win in 2040. But only the latest result shapes the tie now, and one goal separates them.

The absences make the task harder to read. Nantes will be without Cristian Armengol, while Vitesse are missing Marcel Hering, Stuart Musselwhite and Daniel. The Dutch side’s league-phase form was WDDLD, against Nantes’ WWLWW, and Vitesse also lost to Nantes in the first meeting. In their domestic leagues, Nantes are second in Ligue 1 Uber Eats on 56 points from 25 games and have won five in a row; Vitesse are third in the Eredivisie with 43 from 24. Those runs sit alongside, rather than decide, a European tie that remains open to one goal’s change in direction.

Napoli begin their tie at home to FC Bayern München on Wednesday, with the return at FC Bayern München on 18 March. The stakes are different: there is no advantage to protect, only a first-leg position to establish before the trip to Germany. Napoli were 22nd in the league phase, taking nine points from eight games; Bayern were eighth with 16. Napoli’s form there was WLLDD, Bayern’s DLWWW.

The recent league-phase results underline the gap in consistency. Napoli won three, drew three and lost four in ten games, while Bayern won five, drew one and lost two in eight. Rubén Montes is injured for Napoli. Bayern have won their last three league-phase matches since their defeat by Juventus on 28 November, and arrive on a five-match winning run in the Bundesliga, where they lead with 60 points from 25 games. Napoli are fourth in Italian Serie A with 56 from 28. Yet the previous meetings offer Napoli a counterpoint: they won all three listed encounters, most recently 3-2 in December 2053. History supplies a note, not a head start.

RB Leipzig also have a first leg at home on Wednesday, against Rotherham United, with the return at Rotherham United on 18 March. Rotherham finished top of the league phase with 22 points from eight games and a perfect run of WWWWW. Leipzig were 19th with 11 points, their form LDWDW. The visitors have not lost in the league phase this season, winning seven and drawing one; the solitary draw came away to Real Madrid FC on 2 October.

The previous meetings make Rotherham’s advantage in expectation unusually concrete. They beat Leipzig 4-1 on 23 October, and had already won both legs of their March 2063 meetings, 3-0 at home and 2-0 away. Leipzig have since gone six league-phase games without defeat, including a penalty shoot-out win over Valencia, but their Wednesday task comes with three injuries: Albert Franco, Jeferson Ortega and Iván. Rotherham are second in the English Premier Division, 58 points from 30 games, while Leipzig are second in the Bundesliga, 50 from 25. Those domestic campaigns frame a tie whose first test is whether Leipzig can stop the earlier meetings from dictating the next one.
