Three Goals, One Derby: Marseille Sweep Bordeaux Aside in the French Cup
Olympique de Marseille answered the sting of their late defeat by Nantes with a commanding 3-0 victory over FC Girondins de Bordeaux on Thursday, reaching the French Cup final.

A place in the French Cup final—and the right to claim this southern rivalry, at least for now—was at stake on Thursday. Olympique de Marseille settled it with three goals and a clean sheet, beating FC Girondins de Bordeaux 3-0 at the Orange Vélodrome.
Eric Geyer struck in the seventh minute, and Alex Mahe added a second in the 28th. Mahe returned to score again in the 65th, making the contest feel less like a derby balanced on a knife-edge than a verdict delivered with growing assurance. Marseille had 63 per cent of the ball and 19 shots; Bordeaux managed six, four on target, but could not prise open the home side’s defence. Klebão made four saves for Marseille.
The result was a bracing answer to Marseille’s 2-1 defeat by Nantes on 29 February, when they led at half-time before conceding in the 84th and 90th minutes. The French Cup semi-final preview had promised a meeting of regional pride and tactical grit. The pride was plainly there; the balance, once Geyer scored, was not. David Molist helped shape Marseille’s control, contributing an assist and four key passes.
The recent history had offered no easy script: Marseille won 3-1 at Bordeaux last August, but Bordeaux had beaten them 2-1 in February 2063. Thursday’s emphatic home win shifts that little ledger decisively towards Marseille, while sending them into the final with their bruised season breathing again.
There was a quieter thread in the Bordeaux goal: Valentino Lazăr, once Marseille’s goalkeeper for 253 games, returned to face his former club. This time, the old association offered no shelter. The derby belonged to Marseille, who turned a cup tie into a statement and left Bordeaux with the long journey back and no final to anticipate.
