Two Points, 10 Games: Dortmund and HSV Meet in a Top-Four Test

Third-placed Hamburger SV take a seven-match unbeaten league run to fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund, with two points between them and both sides still eyeing the places above.

“Two points is not much to settle anything.”

Hamburger SV go to Borussia Dortmund on 15 March with a slim lead in a Bundesliga contest that has the shape of a direct exchange: third against fourth, 46 points against 44, and 10 games left. Dortmund have played once fewer. The winner will have a useful foothold; neither club can afford to treat the other’s position as secure.

HSV have gone seven league games without defeat, though four of those have been draws. Dortmund’s recent league form reads less smoothly, with three defeats among their last five, but they remain fourth despite taking 44 points from 24 games. Their underlying figures make that position look more fragile than the table does: Dortmund have 44 points against 51.9 expected, while HSV’s 46 are ahead of their expected 43.6. Dortmund have scored 46 from chances worth 47 goals; HSV have scored 45 from 46.7.

The first meeting is hard to ignore. On 27 October, HSV won 3-0, with Ibrahim Opeyemi scoring and Neizan Pestano striking twice. Pestano is expected to start again, alongside In-Sung Han, who has four goals in his past five matches. Dortmund’s Morad Hattab has scored six in his past four. That is enough danger for one afternoon’s planning.

There are absences in the HSV midfield and defence. Pavel Kalchev, a regular, is out with sprained knee ligaments and is expected back about 2 April; Zak Galbraith is not in the likely side either. HSV’s expected 4-4-2 has held its shape through 12 successive matches, as has Dortmund’s 4-2-3-1. But the visitors’ expected starters are carrying a collective concern: all 11 are listed below full condition, with Opeyemi at 60 per cent and Han at 65.

Dortmund’s recent league return has been costly, but this is a chance to make the table reflect their stronger expected-points total. HSV, meanwhile, can show that their actual points are no accident. The margin between them is two; the margin for error is smaller.
