One Low Drive, Another Hoffenheim Derby Win

Paul Hülsmann’s first-half strike gave TSG Hoffenheim a 1-0 Bundesliga victory over Sport-Club Freiburg and extended their recent grip on the local rivalry.

1-0. TSG Hoffenheim have beaten Sport-Club Freiburg again, and the derby’s decisive moment was as clean as it was costly for the hosts: Paul Hülsmann drove low from outside the box in the 21st minute.

Freiburg pushed and passed, but could not turn possession into a shot on target. They had three attempts and one clear-cut chance; none beat Loris Maes. Hoffenheim managed seven shots, with two on target, and made the one that mattered count. The final whistle left the home side with nothing from a contest in which the margin was a single hard strike.

The result extends a pattern across the recent meetings. Hoffenheim won 2-1 in January last year and 1-0 in August 2062, before a 1-1 draw in October. Today’s victory gives Hoffenheim three wins in the last four listed derbies, with one draw.

Hülsmann was taken off in first-half stoppage time, but his work was already done. Hoffenheim had to reshape their side as the match wore on, while Freiburg also changed their formation. Neither adjustment brought the hosts a goal. The derby remained tense and tight, but Hoffenheim carried the sharper edge where it counted.

There was a familiar face among the late changes: Oliveira, now with Hoffenheim, came on at centre-back. He spent two seasons at Freiburg and made 31 appearances for the club. This time the old connection offered no comfort to the home crowd. Hoffenheim leave with the points, and the local bragging rights once more.
