“Three goals, none answered”

Chelsea brushed Arsenal aside at the Drogba Arena with a 3-0 win that keeps their title charge rolling.

A year ago they put four past Arsenal without reply. In February it was 4-0 again. So when Howard Parkins opened the scoring after half an hour, the only surprise was that it had taken Chelsea so long.

By the end it was 3-0, and the scoreline flattered the visitors. Arsenal managed one shot all game. One. Chelsea had 21, ten on target, four clear-cut chances, and an expected goals figure of 3.5. It was less a derby than a demonstration.

The champions were not at their slickest in the first half. Billy Laing spurned five chances, enough for 1.84 expected goals on his own. But the breakthrough came from Parkins, arriving late to finish after Francisco Pardal’s incisive pass. Pardal was the game’s heartbeat: an assist, two key passes, four tackles, 13.4 kilometres of running. A midfielder’s masterclass.

Arsenal’s resistance crumbled just before the break when Oluwaseun Duru picked up a second yellow card. From then on the only question was how many. The answer came late, with two goals in stoppage time from substitutes Joaquín and Júnior, the latter nodding in at the far post.

Oded Ya’acov, a former Chelsea reserve, kept the score respectable with eight saves and seven clearances, but he was a lone hand on a sinking ship. Arsenal’s back line, missing regulars Niki Wolland and Gerry Russell, looked every inch a side 12th in the table.

Chelsea’s selection had a story of its own. Lionel Messi, the little Argentine who has lit up this league, started on the bench. Rubén Medina took his slot on the left and did little to suggest a permanent switch. Messi came on for the last 22 minutes and immediately stretched the tiring Arsenal defence.

The win keeps Chelsea top with 46 points from 16 games. Arsenal are 12th on 19, a yawning chasm between the sides. The champions have won 41 league titles in a row. Arsenal’s last title run ended in 1935. Some gaps never close.

Francisco Pardal was named player of the match, and rightly so. He ran the game from the base of midfield, breaking up attacks and starting them. Chelsea’s engine room, with Pardal and Parkins, is the envy of Europe.

As the final whistle blew, the Drogba Arena rose to salute another routine victory. For Chelsea, it was just another Saturday. For Arsenal, it was a reminder of how far they have fallen.
