Ponferrada make the favourites pay

Real Madrid FC arrived as slight favourites, but Ponferrada came with the sharper recent edge: three wins in their last four, including a Champions League victory away to AEK Athens. Madrid had won only once in five, drawing their last three league matches. Before this meeting, Ponferrada stood fifth in the Spanish First Division, a point ahead of seventh-placed Madrid; the head-to-head history, however, had heavily favoured the visitors, with 29 wins to Ponferrada’s two and five draws. A crowd of 14,193, including 2,250 away supporters, watched the balance of old expectation give way to an emphatic home performance.

Ponferrada took the ball and, increasingly, the authority. Madrid managed only two shots on target, while the home side fashioned nine, and the first breakthrough came in the 37th minute: Federico Rocchi, the 29-year-old Italian striker, finished to put Ponferrada ahead. Five minutes later he struck again, turning a promising evening into a challenge Madrid could not answer. Their difficulties were compounded by injuries: Sergio Barroso went off in the 31st minute, and Rıdvan Baran followed in the 39th. Ronaldinho had come on for Barroso; Khaidar Lobanov replaced Baran. The visitors’ reshuffling brought no relief.

Fran Belmonte, Ponferrada’s 26-year-old Spanish left winger, took the game beyond doubt in the 70th minute. He was the match’s outstanding figure, earning Player of the Match after two goals, an assist and a performance full of purposeful work. Alberto Arias, introduced moments before, supplied an assist; Gino van Velzen also stood out, making an assist and repeatedly helping Ponferrada sustain its pressure. Rocchi had already departed in the 68th minute, but the home attack lost none of its appetite.

Belmonte completed his double in the 88th minute, and the 4-0 scoreline gave shape to what the chances had been saying: Ponferrada had 14 attempts and two clear-cut opportunities, Madrid none of the latter. The home side had toiled for this, not merely waited for Madrid to falter; the visitors’ injuries and lack of threat were part of the story, but so was Ponferrada’s command of the ball and the moment. There was no late escape, only the clear finish of a night in which the underdogs turned a favourable history for Madrid into a rout.
